Announcing the
2012 Sunday Salons

Join us on Sunday afternoons for inspriration, learning, refreshments and conversation once per month at the home of Thomas Cole, where the Hudson River School began. Tickets are $8 per person, or $6 for members, and admission to these popular lectures is first-come-first-served.

January 15
Christine I. Oaklander
The Hunt for Thomas Cole's Lost, Last, Unfinished Series: The Cross and the World In the late 1980s, a legendary New York art dealer acquired an oil study for one of five large paintings in Cole's monumental unfinished series, The Cross and the World, which he sold to the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Learning that the series – still in Cole’s New Studio at the time of his death – had vanished from sight in the 1870s, the dealer sent his executive assistant, Christine I. Oaklander, out to hunt them down. Dr. Oaklander, now a private art consultant and arts coordinator for Lehigh Valley Health Network in Pennsylvania, will discuss the history and iconography of Cole's last, lost series and give us a "behind the scenes" glimpse of her quest.

February 12
Kevin Sharp
Thomas Cole in Love Join Kevin Sharp, the Linda W. and S. Herbert Rhea Director, Dixon Gallery and Gardens, as he explores Cole's use of Romantic imagery from English poets such as Byron and Coleridge to create dramatic works that stood in stark contrast to the gentle landscape images that had come before.

March 11
Katherine Bourguignon
Thomas Cole Exhibition at the Louvre Thomas Cole has his own exhibition at the Louvre! Join us as Dr. Bourguignon, associate curator from the Terra Foundation for American Art Europe, travels all the way from Paris, France, to speak about this remarkable new exhibition.

April 15
Julie Levin Caro
Thomas Cole’s New Studio Julie Levin Caro, professor at Warren Wilson College, Asheville, North Carolina, offers a new perspective on Thomas Cole's artistic identity by describing his design and siting of a rustic Italianate cottage studio as a means of enacting and immortalizing his identity as an artist-gentleman, a political conservative and an American.

Masters on Main
1st Anniversary Cocktail Party

This January marks the first anniversary of Catskill's Masters on Main Street project, an experiment transforming the town's empty storefronts through exhibitions of new art from top studio art programs throughout the country.

Over 25 major institutions have participated in showing the work of over 100 artists from all over the world. The work has included video and film, sculpture, installations, painting, performance and music shown individually as well as collaboratively in group shows. It is an exciting and rewarding initiative with seemingly unlimited prospects.

Thanks to the tremendous and tireless talent of Project Director, Fawn Potash as well as the generosity of the building owners, municipal leaders, deeply committed artists and a small group of committed patrons the program has flourished. Next year promises to be another very exciting line-up. We have exhibition commitments for Round 4 (March,April, May, collaborating with Occupy Wall Street's Art and Culture Committee) and Round 5 (June, July, August, the best work from New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship winners).

It's time now to put the Masters on Main Street program on more stable financial footing so we can assure our future commitments.

With great thanks to our much treasured Catskill Community Theatre, we are now preparing for the second annual Catskill Film and Video Festival on Sunday, January 29th (link).

To broaden our fundraising base, we are planning a cocktail party for benefactors at $100 per person on the eve of the festival, Saturday, January 28th.

Your help in spreading the word would be invaluable. Please forward this note or drop us a line with contact information we can add to the invitation list. It would help us tremendously in raising awareness of the rich opportunity this program provides both for artists and for Catskill.

Our best wishes in the new year,

Santa’s Helpers Success !!

In a season filled with hope and joy it is comforting to know that the holiday spirit lives on in the community of Catskill

In the photo - Left to Right Back Row: M. Ahearn, T. Eddgington, S. McNeff, A. Hanna, J. Goldpaugh, E. Brink, Justin and Unk Slater of Slater's Great American, N. Goffredo, L. Mudge, O. Fiske, C. DiStefano, J. Bulich, A. Steere Front Row: M. Magliocca, U. Kalsoom, L. Murariu, B. Linscott, Ms. Holdridge, P. Kent, S. Buta, K. Bulich

Catskill High School students participated in their annual Santa’s Helpers fundraising campaign in early December and ended up collecting $8,500 to assist in the feeding of needy families within the Catskill Central School District. This enormous outpouring of donations and time was made possible by so many.

We would like to thank all the local businesses that allowed students to collect in front of their doors including: Stewarts, Extra Mart by the NYS Thruway, Village Pizza, La Conca D’Oro, Tatiana’s, Getty by the Rip Van Winkle Bridge, Dunkin’ Donuts, Jerry’s Deli, Koch’s, Ambrosia Diner, Bank of Greene County, McDonald’s, Walmart, Subway, Tori Gs, and Pomodoros. A very special thanks to Slater’s Great American of Cairo, who donated the truck to deliver the food to Catskill High School and gave a 20% discount, amounting to over $2,000 on all the food purchased. We would also like to thank the Catskill Lioness Club for their generous donations to the cause.

With the $8,500 raised we were able to feed 60 needy families in Catskill with enough food for over a week. This program has been a long standing tradition at Catskill High School, dating back over 60 years. We hope that the program continues to be a success, especially in years like 2011, when so many have been hit so hard by the tough economic times.

A Special Message from our Friends at
CATWALK
Send to us on 12/15

Greetings Catwalk Friends and Artists,
SEASONAL WISHES
As the cold days of Winter approach and Catwalk starts to nestle into the coziness of the Holiday season, we think of you: all our friends and talented artists who have been such a great part of the Catwalk Art Residency Program. As the 2011 season comes to an end we reflect back so fondly on all the amazing talent that came to Catwalk this year, some familiar faces and some new ones.
This year despite serious weather with Hurricane Irene, artists went on visits to Saugerties Lighthouse, Olana, Hudson, and participated in summer festivals and concerts. Sharing the program were three Institutions this year: In total we had two artists from Columbia, eight from Vassar & twelve from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Many Artists were MFA Alums and this provided a great balance of the experience and teaching expertise combined with new fresh talent. There was great collaborative pairings, and work of all types was generated from these efforts. Artwork ranged from works on paper to video, with this year more sculpture made at Catwalk than ever before. The longest period to date, Catwalk's season started in May 2011 and lasted through Halloween and the first ice storm of the Winter!

CATWALK EXHIBITED
This year also marked the first exhibition of Catwalk artists in Catskill NY as part of the
Masters on Main program. A huge success, and great fun on Main St., four of our artists sold works! Catwalk artists participated in several rounds of the program which revitalizes under-used vacant store front property. Partnering with the hard-working and tireless, Fawn Potash, SAIC Alum and Director of the program, Catwalk had a great time, and was pleased to play a vital role in the exhibitions. Currently we have Catwalk Artist Rena Leinberger's SUNY Newpaltz Art students on display, so if you are in the area, be sure to stop by to visit. Next on board is Round 4 with an exhibition theme echoing sentiments felt nation wide of the Occupy Wall Street Movement. Also a film and video festival slated for January 29th 2012. Catwalk artists participating will include Rebecca Carter and Andrea Goldman. To learn more visit the website link below http://www.greenearts.org/exhibitions/mastersonmain

CATWALK GROUNDS
This year Catwalk dredged the pond, and thankfully because of a rainy summer, the newly renovated ponds are filled and cleaned! They look great! Even though a few trees were downed by the storms, no major damage other than a tumbled wall and gate resulted. Added this year was a new workbench for sculpture in the Coach house studio. Future improvements include sprucing up of the Garage space studio. OUR WEBSITE We have updated our website with work by artists from this season, and we have added a new blog section for our Catwalk Artists. This gives a forum for comments and posted messages as well as links to events of interest.

Visit it along with our news page to see what Catwalk Artists are up to. http://catwalkartresidency.com/?page_id=742
Also don't forget to keep in touch and keep following us on facebook and Twitter too!

Once again, it has been great seeing so many Artists this year and hearing about what everyone has been doing all over the world. As Purcell is taking many trips to New York City she has enjoyed seeing many exhibitions of the work by Catwalk Artists and we are so pleased everyone is doing so well. Don't forget love to hear how you are, so please keep in touch. It is already time to plan next year so we are saying bye for now! We wish you the best and success a great start to your holiday season!

Very Truly Yours, Catwalk Purcell & Jim Palmer Chuck Irwin & Victoria Mequin Bell Merry-Beth Noble & Hague Williams
